Texas’ sales tax-free holiday will span Aug. 6-8. For three days, customers will not have to pay the standard 8.25% sales tax on select clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks under $100, among other items needed for the coming school year.

Customers shopping in person are encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines. Qualifying items can be purchased online or by telephone or mail as long as the item is both delivered and paid for during the exemption period or the customer pays for the item and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, according to the state comptroller.

Exemption certifications are not required unless they are made under a business account. In that case, the retailer must obtain an exemption certificate from the purchaser, which certifies the items purchased are for an elementary or secondary school student, officials said.

Not all backpacks qualify for tax exemptions, as certain backpacks that are defined as luggage, briefcases, athletic bags, computer bags and purses do not qualify. For a full list of tax-free and taxable items exempt from Aug. 6-8, visit www.texastaxholiday.org.
